Your RV is spacious enough for the whole family and comfortable enough to travel in for a few days, a week or even a whole month at a time! But some family members may end up left behind when you’d rather bring them along: your pets. You may also be transitioning to full-time RV living and wondering how to safely travel with your beloved kitty or pup when their sticks’n’bricks home is no more. Here are some of our top tips for stress-free RV travel with your cats and dogs.
Visit the Vet First
You’ll first want to take your pet to the vet to make sure they have a clean bill of health before you travel with them. Get their vaccinations and blood work done now so that you know your pet is in good shape to travel. You can talk to the vet about anxiety medication or ways to keep your pet calm on the road, too. Your vet will also probably recommend that you apply some flea medication to your pet since they’ll be in more contact with the great outdoors.
Check Your Pet’s Paperwork and Identification
Make sure you have copies of all of your pet’s vaccination records on hand. If your pet is not microchipped or doesn’t have an ID tag, this is a good time to invest in one or both of these forms of identification. You never know when your pet might bolt into the woods!
Gathering Supplies
Get all of your pet’s necessities together. You’re going to need a supply of their regular food (changing your pet’s diet on vacation is a recipe for disaster), treats, plenty of fresh water, their favorite toys, a bed, a blanket, a crate, a litter box and plenty of litter (for cats), their leash and harness and their medications, if they take any.
